Common concerns for students

MEET YOUR CLINICIAN

Tia Yu  | Oral Health Therapist

I'm a registered Oral Health Therapist with over six years of experience in private practice across Wellington. I graduated from the University of Otago in 2018 and have since worked with a wide range of patients, adapting care to suit each individuals

By day I work at Lumino The Dentists on Woodward Street, one of New Zealand's most trusted dental networks. Alongside that, I founded Wholesome Smiles — Wellington's first mobile dental hygiene service, to make professional oral health care accessible to those who find it difficult to attend a traditional clinic.

I'm completing further training to extend my scope to include restorative work for adult patients, and all care through this programme is carried out under the oversight of an experienced dentist at Lumino. I also speak Mandarin fluently, making me well placed to support Wellington's international student community.

Dr Andrew Middlemiss  |  Clinical Supervisor

Andrew is the experienced dentist who oversees all treatment carried out through this programme. With a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from the University of Otago (2001) and over 10 years practising at a high level in London, he brings a wealth of clinical experience and a clear philosophy: do as little as necessary to achieve lasting results.

His approach — known as minimally invasive dentistry — means preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, rather than over-treating. It's a patient-first mindset that shapes the care Tia delivers under his mentorship.

During his time in London, Andrew was a member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and he continues to develop his skills in aesthetic and restorative dentistry. He describes his goal simply: to help patients leave with a smile they feel confident in.

Who carries out the treatment?

All care is carried out by Tia, a registered Oral Health Therapist with 6+ years of clinical experience, under the guidance of Dr Andrew Middlemiss at Lumino The Dentists, Woodward Street.

What is an oral health therapist?

What should I bring?

Just your student ID. If you have any relevant medical information, current medications, known allergies, or previous dental records, bring those along too. We'll complete a quick health history form with you before we start.

What if something more serious is found?

We'll walk you through every finding clearly and in plain language. If you need treatment beyond what's covered in this programme, we'll explain your options and help connect you with the right care,  you'll never be left without a clear next step.

I'm nervous about dental visits — will that be okay?

Absolutely. Tia is known for her calm, gentle approach and genuinely enjoys putting nervous patients at ease. Just mention any anxieties when you get in touch and  we'll make sure you feel comfortable every step of the way.
