WINZ Dental Help – Step-by-Step Guide for
Elderly & People with Disabilities

If you or someone you care for needs urgent dental hygiene care but cost is a concern, you might be able to get help through Work and Income (WINZ).

We make it easy — especially for patients who are elderly, in care, or living with a disability. We come to you, help with the paperwork, and guide you through the process so you can access essential dental treatment at home or in a rest home.

✅ What WINZ Dental Support Can Cover

WINZ may cover up to $1,000 every 52 weeks for essential dental care — and that includes hygiene treatment when it’s needed for:

  • Gum infection or inflammation

  • Pain, bleeding, or visible dental concerns

  • Situations where the patient can’t brush or clean properly due to disability, illness, or ageing

Routine cleaning isn’t usually covered — but if it’s considered essential for health, it may qualify. We’ll help you present this clearly in the quote.

👥 Who Might Be Eligible?

You may qualify if you or your loved one:

  • Gets a pension or main benefit

  • Lives in a rest home or receives the Residential Care Subsidy

  • Has low income or savings

  • Has a disability or medical condition that affects oral care

  • Has to be a New Zealand citizen or a resident/permanent resident

🪥 How the Process Works — 4 Easy Steps

Step 1: Book a Mobile WINZ Quote Appointment

🕑 Cost: $185 (payment on the day, claim back after application approved)
We’ll arrange a time to visit the patient at home or in their rest home.

If you're more than 20 minutes from Wellington central, a small travel fee may apply — but don’t worry, this can be included in the WINZ claim.

Step 2: In-Home Exam + WINZ Paperwork

During our visit, we’ll:

  • Gently check the patient’s oral health

  • Take photos and notes if needed

  • Fill out the official Dental Treatment Information Form

  • Provide a clear, simple quote to submit to WINZ

If we find that other essential dental treatments are needed — like fillings or extractions — before starting hygiene care, we’ll let you know right away so you can plan accordingly.

We can go over everything with the family or support person and make sure it's all ready to go.

Step 3: You or Your Family Apply with WINZ

The family or agent can submit the documents either:

  • Online via MyMSD, or

  • In person at a WINZ office

WINZ might ask for some extra info like income, savings, or ID — we’ll walk you through what to expect.

Step 4: Once Approved, We Book the Appointments

When WINZ approves the quote:

  • We’ll get in touch to schedule the hygiene appointments

  • WINZ can pay us directly, or you can pay and be reimbursed

  • If your plan includes multiple visits (e.g. 3 sessions spaced over the year), it’s all included in the same quote

🧑‍⚕️ Why Choose Mobile Dental Hygiene?

We understand how hard it can be to get to a clinic — especially for those who are older, have disabilities, or are dealing with health issues.

Our mobile dental hygiene service is designed to be:

  • Gentle, respectful, and calm

  • Fully professional, in the comfort of home or care

  • Supportive for both the patient and their whānau
