Meet Your Oral Health Therapist

Walking with grand dad in old neighbourhood, 2015

Kia ora, I’m Tia – Wellington’s first mobile oral health therapist! My journey into oral health began at 16, when I helped care for my granddad, who had Parkinson’s disease. Taking him to the dentist was no small task—it required special taxis, careful coordination from our whole family, and patience with his slow movements. He often felt like a burden and even tried to file his dentures himself using tools from home. Seeing my grandma, mum, and uncles work tirelessly to support him, I realised how difficult it can be for people with similar challenges to access the care they need.

After graduating from the University of Otago in 2018, I spent several years working in private clinics, helping many people improve their oral health. But I knew there was more I could do. Traditional dental care isn’t accessible to everyone, especially those with mobility issues, time constraints, or dental anxiety.

I plan to grow Wholesome Smiles gradually, starting with one to two days a week alongside my current clinical work, with the goal of eventually dedicating more time to this service as demand grows. With Wholesome Smiles, my mission is to go beyond treatment. To me, it’s about holistic health supported by having good oral health, and the heartfelt smiles shared between everyone involved—the care receiver, the carer, and the provider. Through my mobile service, I bring professional, compassionate care directly to those who need it most, ensuring that everyone has access to the oral healthcare they deserve.
