Mobile Oral Health Therapy Is Expanding — What My Postgrad Study Means for Your Dental Care

If you've been a client of my mobile oral health practice — or if you've been looking for accessible dental care that comes to you — this is news worth reading.
I've been accepted into postgraduate study in adult oral health therapy with Otago University. And while that means some changes to my availability over the next 12 months, it ultimately means something significant: more treatment options, delivered right where you are.
What Is an Oral Health Therapist — and Why Does Postgrad Training Matter?
Oral health therapists are registered dental professionals who provide a wide range of preventive and basic restorative care. In New Zealand, our scope of practice is defined by our registration — and postgraduate study in adult oral health therapy expands that scope considerably.
Right now, a large portion of my work focuses on preventive care, assessments, and treatment for younger patients. This additional training qualifies me to provide restorative treatment for adults — things like routine dental exams and fillings — that I have previously had to refer elsewhere.
For many of my clients, this closes a real gap. Referrals take time. Travelling to a separate clinic isn't always possible. One of the core reasons I built a mobile practice was to reduce exactly those barriers — and this qualification takes that further.
Why I Chose Mobile Oral Health Care in the First Place
Mobile oral health therapy exists because not everyone can get to a clinic.
Whether it's limited transport, disability, caring responsibilities, work commitments, or simply the cost and logistics of travelling to a dental practice — there are a lot of people in Pōneke who go without routine dental treatment for far too long.
My practice was built around those people. I bring the equipment to you: homes, community facilities, workplaces, rest homes. No waiting rooms, no distance barriers, no referral hoops to jump through just to get a basic exam.
Postgraduate study in adult oral health therapy is the natural next step in that mission — to be able to offer more complete care to the communities I already serve.
What Changes During My Study Year
I want to be upfront about what this means practically.
From end of June, my mobile service will continue at reduced capacity while I complete the postgraduate programme. I will still be accepting bookings, but my availability will be more limited than usual.
Here's what that means for you:
Existing clients: Please get in touch as soon as possible so we can schedule ahead and make sure your care doesn't lapse. Don't wait until you need an appointment — plan now.
New clients: This is actually a good time to register with my practice. I'm still taking on new patients and building my books for the year ahead.
The reduced availability is temporary. The expanded capability is permanent.
What to Expect When I Graduate
Once I complete postgraduate training in adult oral health therapy, my mobile service will offer:
Comprehensive oral health assessments for adults (with x-rays)
Preventive treatment including scaling, cleaning, and oral hygiene instruction
Restorative treatment for adults — fillings and related care, delivered mobile
Continued care for adolescents within my existing scope
Ongoing support for patients who face barriers to accessing traditional dental clinics
For people in Pōneke who currently have no regular dental care — this matters.

A Note of Thanks
To every client, family, community group, and colleague who has supported this practice — thank you. This study is a direct result of what I've seen and heard from the people I care for. It's a privilege to do this work, and I'm excited about what the next chapter looks like.
The mission hasn't changed: quality oral health care, for everyone, wherever you are.
